Cedar Rapids/Iowa City – More than 1.2 million passengers chose to fly through the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID) in 2022, marking the airport’s second highest year for passengers.

The total number of passengers in 2022 is second only to the record-breaking year in 2019 when 1.3 total passengers used CID as their airport of choice.

Marty Lenss, CID director, says those numbers reflect a strong regional economy and pent-up travel demand by Eastern Iowans.

“Business travel is still not back to pre-pandemic levels, but it is getting closer to the 50 percent leisure, 50 percent business travelers that we saw in 2019,” he says. “This tracks with what we are seeing with airports nationwide.”

Air service at CID has changed as it has with its counterparts, where smaller regional jets are being replace by larger, mainline aircraft. In addition, CID saw the return of two seasonal flights, Allegiant service to Sarasota Bradenton International Airport (SRQ) and Frontier service to Orland International Airport (MCO). Each of those flights began service in November 2021.

CID had a major air service announcement prior to the holidays when American Airlines announced it will start nonstop service to Reagan National Airport (DCA) in Washington, D.C. The daily flight begins June 1 and tickets can be booked now at American Airline’s website: aa.com.

“The addition of the Washington, D.C. flight is a game-changer for CID and for Eastern Iowa,” Lenss says. “For Iowa to have two gateway airports that have this premium service speaks volumes about the state’s economy.”
