American Airlines to start PHX service; May is another record-breaker for CID

Cedar Rapids/Iowa City – It is going to be even easier to get to the Valley of the Sun – and points West – with American Airlines new seasonal nonstop service to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Daily flights begin Dec. 18 and will be on a two-class, 70-plus seat regional jet. The flight is currently in the schedule through April 6. Tickets can be booked starting July 1. Go to aa.com for details.

This announcement marks the 15th nonstop destination offered out of the Eastern Iowa Airport (CID).

Airport Director Marty Lenss says this is another example of an airline investing in CID and the eastern Iowa region.

“The addition of nonstop Phoenix Sky Harbor service by American Airlines is, in large part, because the airline can see the region’s support,” Lenss says.

CID monthly passenger totals have consistently been record-breakers, including May, with the total number of passenger was up 10.5 percent more than May 2018. Overall, year-to-date passenger totals have increased 6.6 percent.

“When we promote our Fly Local, Fly CID, program it’s because we know the more people use CID, the more air service opportunities we will have,” Lenss says. “When new destinations, additional flights, or larger aircraft are added to the CID schedule, it is important for people to book CID so these enhancements can be successful.”

Additional air service enhancements include:

    • Nashville service on Allegiant has been extended through the end of October; Allegiant’s LAX seasonal flight started June 5 and goes through early August.
    • United added a third daily flight to Denver (DEN).
    • American added a fourth daily flight to Dallas (DFW), increased capacity to Chicago (ORD) and will add two more ORD flights in October
    • Frontier will have four to five weekly flights to Denver (DEN).
    • Delta added a third daily flight to Atlanta (ATL).
